The Quiet Room at the Duke University Medical Cancer Center is a special place among the bustling healing environment of modern a medical center. From its inception Duda | Paine Architects planned this womb-like space as a niche where patients, family and medical professionals could find respite. The design addresses each individual's personal needs through the use of simple yet powerful references to nature and graceful transitions of light and sound.

Duke Quiet Room

Inside Duke Medicine reports that the room is "a healing space to nourish the mind, body and spirit." The center-point of the space features a glass sculpture which closely resembles a pool of water or fount. The "water" is created by a precise algorithm of LED lighting. It sits on an inner circle paved with small river rocks. The room is lined wood structures that support lighting and nest the seating areas. Rear paneling creates a pattern that is reminiscent of gothic windows and flying buttresses.

The sounds of the room, which include water and song birds, along with the lighting, transition throughout the day on an hour-long program. Depending on the time of day or night the room may be filled with warm orange hues, cool blues and dramatic purples.

B-K Lighting's custom department worked with Cline Bettridge Bernstein Lighting Design along with Enterprise Lighting Sales Representative Richard Agriss to facilitate the perfect custom LED downlight for the oasis-like space. The 8W c1209-24 was the result of those efforts. The custom luminaire is based upon the Micro Nite Star™ with BKSSL® solid state technology.

The Quiet Room was presented with a 2013 IES Illumination Award of Merit and Architectural Lighting magazine's citation for Best Use of Color also in 2013.
