Trinity Church at Wall Street is one of the oldest continually occupied sites in New York City and has a very mature history going back to the per-Revolution English colony. The first church was founded in 1698 and oversaw some 215 acres by 1705. Unfortunately, the original building was destroyed in the Great New York Fire of 1776.

The second church of the same name was completed in 1790 but was damaged by heavy snow and the building was torn down because of safety concerns.

The third and present-day church was completed in 1846 and up until 1890 was the tallest structure in the city. Due to its royal history and expansive parish (which was split with Grace Church at Broadway and 10th) Trinity Church is one of the wealthiest individual parishes in the world mainly due to its real estate holdings on the island of Manhattan.

For December 2014 our Best Shot focuses on an intimate part of the church, the vestibule (the anteroom of a church between the outer doors and the church edifice proper). Here sixteen custom El Dorado Series™ luminaires were specified by Melanie Freundlich Lighting Design in conjuncture with architecture firm Murphy Burnham & Buttrick.

The custom fixtures, c1207-63, are finished lovingly in Antique Brass Powder (ABP) and utilize an e36, 8W, 2700K solid state BKSSL® system with Wide Flood (WFL) optics and dual #12 soft focus lenses. The fixture contains two integral drivers.

Lighting designer Melanie Freundlich was kind enough to provide B-K Lighting with some comments on the project and the fixture design,

Trinity Church Wall Street, New York has embarked on Phase 1 of a Master Plan to renovate and reconfigure this historic building. Work began with the Entry, Middle Vestibule and Narthax including enlarging a gathering area just inside the vestibule and updating the lighting in all three spaces.

We chose to replace the wall mounted halogen uplights with sustainable, low wattage up/down sconces to improve fixture appearance, increase brightness, enhance the intricately carved wood paneling, and reduce maintenance costs.

B-K Lighting provided customized luminaires to accommodate the existing complicated mounting conditions. A modified lengthened stem (1"x 6 5/8") and custom SMJ machined aluminum canopy were required to locate the fixture clear of the deeply carved wood surfaces and an extra-long wire whip (15 feet) was provided to reach the remote j-boxes located in an adjacent room.
