The most-watched telecast program in American history abruptly changed course following the 34 minute lighting failure when San Francisco seemed to realize in the 3rd quarter that the game had become a do-or-die situation.  If they wanted to bring home the championship to the City-by-the-Bay they'd have to earn it through fundamental execution (as opposed to fumbles and interceptions).

John Harbaugh, the Ravens head coach well understood what the lighting failure meant for his team and what a respite could do for Jim's 49ers. Amid post-game talk of no-call calls and rough sportsmanship (from both teams) the game was ultimately decided by the tenacity of the Baltimore Ravens' offensive and defensive plays.

Officials have said that a power surge caused equipment to trip safety breakers which killed half of the stadium's lighting.  Officials were assertive that the power-hungry half-time show was not the cause since it was sourced by in-stadium generators.  The Superdome is poised for at least a few up-hill challenges in future Super Bowl bids because of the issue.

Tim Gunther, partner of Lighting Environments and a Baltimore Ravens super-fan, well understands the complexity of modern-day lighting systems built on electrical grids constructed 40, 50 or more years ago. As technology continues to advance, the lighting industry will become even more efficient putting less strain on those systems while at the same time lowering overall environmental impact.
